The Pazhassiraja Archaeological Museum, situated in East Hill, Kozhikode, Kerala, is a rich repository of ancient artifacts, art, and historical treasures. Established in 1976, the museum is dedicated to showcasing Kerala’s rich past and serves as a vital center for archaeological and historical exploration. Named after Pazhassi Raja, the legendary “Lion of Kerala,” the museum honors his legacy in resisting British colonization.

The building housing the museum was originally constructed in 1812 as the East Hill Bungalow and was later renamed to honor the legendary warrior’s legacy in 1980. Managed by the Kerala State Archaeology Department, this museum offers a glimpse into Kerala’s cultural evolution, from megalithic times to the colonial era.

Highlights of the Pazhassiraja Archaeological Museum

The museum features an extensive range of artifacts dating from 1000 BC to 200 AD, offering visitors an opportunity to explore ancient civilizations and their legacies. Among its most fascinating exhibits are megalithic displays, which include stone sculptures, burial urns, and umbrella stones—tombstones of ancient rulers.

Visitors can also explore the artifacts from the Indus Valley Civilization, which are showcased alongside ancient pottery, toys, and metal sculptures. A notable feature of the museum is its impressive collection of ancient coins, temple models, and hero stones (Veerakkallu), which offer a glimpse into Kerala’s rich cultural heritage.

A special section of the museum is dedicated to Pazhassi Raja, with relics, weapons, and personal memorabilia, reflecting his bravery and leadership in resisting British colonial forces. Additionally, the museum displays colonial-era weaponry used by the British and French forces, offering a historical perspective on the region’s warfare.

Visitor Information

The Pazhassiraja Archaeological Museum is open daily from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with a weekly holiday on Mondays. Entry is free for students, while INR 20 is charged for general visitors. The museum is easily accessible by road, just a short drive from the city center, and well-connected to major transport hubs. Housed in a colonial-era building that once served as a residence for British collectors, the museum’s Kerala-style architecture adds to its historical charm.
