If you’re looking for a hidden gem to explore, Pindimedu Waterfalls should be on your list! Located near Pooyamkutty in Kothamangalam Thaluk of Ernakulam district, Kerala, this stunning waterfall is considered the highest in the region. It’s nestled in the Karinthiri River, a tributary of the mighty Periyar River.

Discover Pindimedu Waterfalls

Nestled in the heart of the verdant Pooyamkutty forest, Pindimedu Waterfall is a true hidden gem. The trek to this magical cascade will lead you through a breathtaking landscape of quaint tribal settlements and their rustic huts. With over 100 tribal families calling this lush forest home, they have to trek almost 20 kilometers through the dense jungle just to reach the main road.

The Critical Elephant Corridor

The Pooyamkutty forest is not just home to the stunning Pindimedu Waterfall but also serves as a critical elephant corridor. With the highest population of elephants in Kerala, the forest connects the Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary and Eravikulam National Park, making it a significant migration route for these majestic creatures. The bamboo forests in the area provide a perfect habitat for these gentle giants, making it an important site for wildlife conservation.

A Captivating Shooting Location

It’s no surprise that the makers of the Malayalam blockbuster, Pulimurugan, featuring Mohanlal, chose Pindimedu Waterfall as one of their shooting locations. And rightly so! A trip to this captivating waterfall will leave you spellbound by the sheer magnificence of nature. As you take in the tranquil beauty of your surroundings, you’ll feel a profound connection with nature, leaving you in awe of the wonder that abounds all around us.

The Abandoned Hydroelectric Project

Pooyamkutty was once home to an ambitious hydroelectric project by the Kerala State Electricity Board, with an estimated cost of INR 250 crore. The project aimed to construct a hydroelectric power station at the magnificent Pindimedu waterfall, with a capacity of 1000 megawatts, similar to the impressive Idukki Dam. However, despite its potential to generate significant power, the project had to be abandoned in the 1990s due to environmental concerns and lack of clearance.

How to Reach Pindimedu Waterfalls

Nestled within a dense forest of the scenic Ernakulam district of Kerala, Pindimedu Waterfall is located 6.5 kilometers away from Pooyamkutty, 12.5 kilometers from Kuttampuzha, 44 kilometers away from Kothamangalam, and 84 kilometers from Kochi.

To make your way to the stunning Pindimedu Waterfalls, you can hop on a bus or hail a taxi from Kothamangalam town to Pooyamkutty. After arriving at Pooyamkutty, brace yourself for an exhilarating 2-3 hour trek to reach the waterfall. Although the trail is not particularly challenging, it can get muddy and slippery during the rainy season.

You’ll be crossing several streams and bridges on your journey, and you’ll also have the opportunity to spot some incredible wildlife and take in the breathtaking scenery around you. The trek is more than worth it to bask in the beauty of Pindimedu Waterfalls.
