Punnathur Kotta is a fort and former palace situated in Kottapadi, around 2 kilometers from the Guruvayoor Sree Krishna Temple, in the Thrissur District of Kerala State. Punnathurkotta was once a local ruler’s palace, but now the palace grounds are used to house the elephants belonging to the temple of Guruvayoor and has been called Anakkotta (meaning ‘Elephant Fort’).
There is also a Naalu Kettu in the compound, a typical rectangular home with a central courtyard belonging to the Punnathur Raja. It is poorly run and currently houses a Papan (Mahout) training school. There is also a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and Bhagavathy in this complex.
Sprawling over 11.5 acres, it is a very pretty location surrounded by lush foliage. The jumbo elephants are its main attractions; about 60 of them are housed here and taken care of.
