Nestled along the northern banks of the Mandovi River, the quaint village of Reis Magos is home to one of Goa’s oldest and most revered churches—the Reis Magos Church. Established in 1555 by Franciscan missionaries, this historic edifice stands as a testament to Goa’s rich colonial past and religious heritage.

Historical Significance and Architecture of Reis Magos Church

The Reis Magos Church, dedicated to St. Jerome, was the first church built in the Bardez taluka. Its construction marked a significant milestone in the spread of Christianity in the region. The church’s architecture reflects a blend of Portuguese and Indian influences, evident in its simple yet elegant design. Notably, the interior was refurbished in 1771, and the distinctive towers were added around 1776, enhancing its grandeur.

Cultural Traditions and Festivities

One of the most celebrated events at the Reis Magos Church is the Feast of the Three Wise Men, locally known as “Festa dos Reis Magos.” Held annually on January 6th, this vibrant festival reenacts the journey of the Magi, drawing devotees and tourists alike. The procession is a colorful spectacle, reflecting the deep-rooted traditions and communal harmony of the Goan people.

Recognizing its historical and cultural importance, efforts have been made to preserve the Reis Magos Church for future generations. The church stands as a symbol of Goa’s diverse heritage, inviting visitors to delve into its storied past and experience the enduring legacy of faith and tradition.

Visitor Information

Situated near the Reis Magos Fort, the church offers visitors a glimpse into Goa’s historical tapestry. The serene surroundings, coupled with panoramic views of the Mandovi River, make it a tranquil retreat for those seeking solace and reflection. The church is open daily from 6:00 AM to 11:00 PM, with Mass held on weekdays at 7:30 AM and on Sundays at 7:30 AM and 5:00 PM. Visitors are encouraged to explore the church’s interiors, which house intricate wood reliefs and the revered shrine to Our Lady of Health.
