Nestled in the serene landscapes of South Goa, Salaulim Dam is a perfect blend of engineering brilliance and natural beauty. Located near Sanguem town, this massive structure is built on the Salaulim River, a tributary of the Zuari River. Spanning an area of 24 square kilometers, the dam was constructed primarily for irrigation and drinking water supply but has now evolved into a popular tourist destination.

Salaulim Dam’s Unique Duckbill Spillway

One of the dam’s most fascinating features is its Duckbill spillway, also known as the Morning Glory spillway. This innovative design allows water to flow through a bell-shaped opening, creating a breathtaking waterfall effect when the reservoir overflows. The spillway serves a functional purpose and adds to the dam’s scenic charm, especially during the monsoon season when water levels are at their peak.

A Peaceful Escape Amidst Nature

The area surrounding the dam is adorned with a beautifully maintained botanical garden, offering visitors a peaceful and refreshing environment. With well-manicured lawns, ornamental plants, and shaded pathways, the garden is an ideal spot for picnics and family outings. The calm waters of the reservoir and the lush greenery make it a haven for nature lovers and photographers alike.

Apart from its role in irrigation and water supply, Salaulim Dam supports fish seed farming and is part of an eco-friendly initiative to promote sustainable tourism. The botanical garden and nature park in the area aim to preserve the local flora and provide visitors with a peaceful retreat in the lap of nature.

Plan Your Visit

The best time to explore Salaulim Dam is during the monsoon season, from June to September, when the reservoir is full, and the surrounding landscape is vibrant and green. However, the dam remains open throughout the year, from 9 AM to 6 PM. An entry fee of INR 60 for adults and INR 30 for children is charged for access to the dam and the garden.

While the site has limited canteen facilities, visitors are advised to carry their own snacks and water. The dam is easily accessible by road from major parts of Goa, but ongoing road construction may cause slight inconvenience. Despite this, the scenic drive through the countryside adds to the overall experience.
