Located on Chorao Island in Goa, the Shri Devki Krishna Ravalnath Saunsthan, also known as Shree Devaki Krishna Temple, offers a tranquil and deeply spiritual experience. This temple is uniquely distinguished as the only place in the world where Lord Krishna is worshipped alongside his biological mother, Mata Devaki.

Shri Devki Krishna Ravalnath Saunsthan: Tranquil and Spiritual

The serene setting of the temple, surrounded by lush greenery and coconut palms, enhances its peaceful atmosphere, providing a perfect environment for reflection and devotion. The temple’s traditional Goan architecture, with intricate carvings and vibrant colors, adds to its charm, making it a visual delight for visitors. The sanctum sanctorum exudes a divine aura, offering a comforting space for devotees. A traditional aarti ceremony occurs regularly, with melodic chants and drumbeats, creating an immersive spiritual experience that draws many visitors.

A Rich History and Cultural Significance of Shree Devaki Krishna Temple

The Shri Devki Krishna Ravalnath Saunsthan has a fascinating historical journey. Originally located in Chorao Island, it was moved multiple times due to the Portuguese Inquisition. The temple was first relocated to Mayem (Bicholim) and then later transported to Marcel, a small town in Ponda taluka, via canoes during the Portuguese occupation. The temple’s connection to the Mahabharata and the battle between Krishna, Balaram, and Jarasandha adds an element of intrigue. It’s said that the island where the temple stands was once a dense forest where Lord Krishna hid from his enemies. Despite facing adversity, the community’s resilience ensured the restoration of the temple in the 17th century. Today, the temple stands as a testament to the strength and unity of its followers, who have also forged bonds with other communities through shared devotion to multiple deities.

The temple is a place of great spiritual and cultural importance, with deities like Devki Krishna, Ravalnath, Bhumika Devi, and Laxmi Ravalnath revered here. The Garbha Griha houses beautiful black stone idols of Devaki and Krishna in child form, adding to the temple’s sacred atmosphere. Major festivals celebrated here include Malni Purnima, Ramanavmi, and Gokulastami, which draw large crowds and enhance the temple’s cultural vibrancy. Although accommodations are limited in the area, the temple’s serene surroundings make it a worthwhile visit for anyone interested in exploring Goa’s spiritual heritage. Visitors can experience a peaceful retreat away from the hustle and bustle of the more touristy spots in Goa, with no wait time or reservations needed for a visit.
