Perched on the tranquil Sivagiri hill in Varkala, Kerala, Sivagiri Mutt is a prominent spiritual and cultural center founded in 1904 by the renowned social reformer Sree Narayana Guru. Serving as the headquarters of the Sree Narayana Dharma Sangham, the Mutt was built to promote the Guru’s transformative message: “One Caste, One Religion, One God.” Spanning 200 acres, its elevated setting and white terraced architecture set a peaceful tone, drawing thousands seeking spiritual clarity, social insight, and historical depth.
Sivagiri Mutt: A Place of Reflection and Reform
A key highlight of the Mutt is the Sarada Temple, constructed by Sree Narayana Guru in 1912. With its distinct octagonal structure and dedication to Goddess Saraswati, the temple represents purity through knowledge rather than ritual. Simple in design, it aligns with the Guru’s progressive ideology, eschewing traditional offerings for meditation and recitation.
Nearby, the Samadhi (final resting place) of Sree Narayana Guru is a focal point for pilgrims. His modest home, preserved within the grounds, displays personal belongings and reflects his life of simplicity and discipline. True to his vision, the Mutt continues to promote education with active institutions like a night school and an elementary school on campus.
