The St. John’s Anglican Church is located near Thalassery Fort, Kannur which was built by Sir Edward Brennan in 1869. During British rule, Sir Edward Brennan was the Master Attendant at Thalassery. Despite the fact that he provided the funds for the church’s building, it could not be finished until after his death. His crypt, which bears the epitaph “The Sterling Upright Englishman,” can be found in the church cemetery.
The church is located on the sea coast, just behind the Thalassery Fort, and is one of the first churches built in the Malabar region. Edward Brennan bequeathed all of his savings to the region’s welfare, including funds to build the educational institution and the church. Brennan’s mortal remains, as well as those of several other East India Company officials, are interred in the church’s cemetery. The church is a fine example of the 1830s Gothic revival style.
