Thenmala Dam, also known as Parappar Dam, in the Kollam district of Kerala is one of the most visited places in the region. Thenmala dam is built across the Kallada river and offers a breathtaking view from the top when you walk for a kilometer from the entrance. Thenmala Dam is Kerala’s second-largest irrigation project. The state’s longest reservoir is located there, and water from it is also used to generate electricity.
With boating available on the reservoir and the Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary enclosing it on all sides, the dam is currently a popular tourist destination in Thenmala. Thenmala Dam features amenities including a musical fountain, sway bridge, amphitheater, and winding pathways. Boating facilities are also available in the reservoir along with several trekking, mountaineering, and hiking activities. It is recommended to carry water with you as one has to hike for a kilometer through steep roads and steps to reach the top of the dam.
