The Thiruvairanikulam Mahadeva Temple is South India’s most popular Siva Parvathy temple. The temple is located in Vellarappally, near Kalady, in the Ernakulam district of Kerala. Kalady is known for being the birthplace of Adi Sankara, a Hindu philosopher who espoused the Advaitha Vedanta doctrine.
The deities of Siva and Parvathy in this temple face in opposite directions, which is rare. Another unique aspect is that Goddess Parvathy’s sanctum is only open for twelve days a year. Lord Shiva, the temple’s most important deity, sits to the temple’s east, while Goddess Parvathy sits to the west. Lord Shiva and Parvathy, who reside in the temple, are said to bestow their devotees the blessing of marriage.
