Peringanad Trichennamangalam Mahadevar Temple, situated in the Adoor taluk of Pathanamthitta district, holds a deep historical connection to the land it resides on. Located in the village of Trichendamangalam, the temple is nestled amidst the hilly regions of Poovankunnimala, Thevarkottumala, Attakottumala, Kadakunnimala, Kunthringamala, and Athiramala.

Architectural Beauty and Cultural Significance

The Trichennamangalam Mahadevar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and boasts remarkable architectural beauty. Its copper-roofed top layer adds to its captivating appearance. While the exact origin of the temple remains unknown, ancient stone inscriptions hint at its completion in the year 982. The temple holds significance as a base on the highway from Kallada to Thoothukudi, functioning as a sanctuary for weary travelers. The surrounding vast grounds served as resting places for horses and soldiers’ encampments.

According to local legends, the temple’s construction was guided by Mangalasseryil Potti, a prominent figure in the area. The temple’s name was changed from “Eeshanthimangalam” to “Thrichendamangalam” during a dispute among the temple’s ruling Brahmins around three hundred years ago. Devotees believe that Arjuna, the son of Indra, established the temple after receiving the blessings of Lord Shiva.

The Trichennamangalam Mahadevar Temple is a testament to exquisite craftsmanship, featuring intricate sculptures and a granite sanctum sanctorum. The main deity is Lord Shiva, while shrines for deities like Sri Parvati, Bhoothathan, Yakshi, Sastha, Nagaraja, Nagayakshi, Madan, Udayan, Rakshasa, Goddess Durga, and Bhadrakali can be found within the temple premises. The temple also houses a grand Oottupura and holds cultural significance in the region.

Over the years, the temple’s administration has been under the responsibility of various individuals and organizations, including the Peringanad Mahadeva Vilasam Hindu Sangam. Brahmasree Radhakrishnabhattathiri of Thamarassery Mutt played a crucial role in developing the temple’s constitution. Presently, the temple is thriving under the leadership of the executive committee, general committee, and Mahadevavilasam Hindu organization, working towards its prosperity and well-being.

A Serene Ambiance and Spiritual Experience

Trichennamangalam temple exudes a serene and peaceful atmosphere, immersing visitors in its tranquil ambiance. It is renowned as one of the prominent Shiva temples in the area, attracting devotees from far and wide. The temple premises feature a spacious parking area, accommodating a large number of vehicles conveniently. Its architectural marvel is evident in the copper-roofed top layer, which adds a breathtaking charm to the temple’s overall appearance.

Every year, during the second week of March, a vibrant festival is celebrated here, adding a joyous and festive spirit to the surroundings. Many visitors make it a regular practice to offer prayers at this divine abode, considering it an integral part of their itinerary. Encircled by lush green vegetation, the temple is nestled in a verdant landscape, creating an atmosphere that is both serene and spiritually uplifting.
