Vellappara Waterfalls is a hidden gem located in the hills of the Idukki district in Kerala, India. It is one of the tallest and most beautiful waterfalls in the region, falling from a height of 300-400 feet. The waterfall is situated inside a private plantation property, making it not very easy to find, and there is no signboard to guide you.
Getting There and Nearby Attractions
Escape the city and enjoy nature at Vellappara Waterfalls and Urumbikkara Hills. Don’t forget essentials like food, water, warm clothes, and a camera to capture memories. Discover historical landmarks like an old tea factory and an ancient temple. Urumbikkara Hills is a must-visit destination with breathtaking views and diverse flora and fauna. The nearest town is Mundakkayam, which is about 13 kilometers away, and from there, you can take two routes to reach the waterfall. Kokkayar is considered the base station for the Urumbikkara trips, and the falls are about 6 kilometers from there. You can either hire a jeep or ride a two-wheeler built for off-road rides to reach the waterfall. If you choose to walk, you will have to park your vehicle on the roadside and follow an unpaved road towards the right, which will take you to the waterfall in about 10-15 minutes.
The best time to visit Vellappara Waterfalls is during the rainy season, when the water flow is abundant, and the surrounding forest is lush green. You can enjoy the refreshing spray of water and the soothing sound of nature. There is no entry fee to visit the falls. Vellappara Waterfalls is not the only attraction in this area; you can also visit other nearby waterfalls such as Vembly Waterfalls and Vadakkemala Waterfalls, which are also on the way to Urumbikkara Hills.
