The Vembanad Rail Bridge also known as Vallarpadam Rail Bridge is located near Kottayam city on Kerala’s famous Vembanad Lake, which is well known for its scenic beauty, gorgeous backwaters and tourist hotspot, Kumarakom. The Vembanad Rail Bridge is the second longest railway bridge in India with a length of 4.62 s kilometres, width of 5 meters, and height of 7.5 meters connecting Edappally and Vallarpadam in Kochi, Kerala. Eighty percent of the bridge is built above water.
The Vembanad Rail Bridge has also known as Edappally – Vallarpadam Bridge. The Edapally-Vallarpadam link begins in Edapally and runs 3 kilometres parallel to an existing track until it reaches Vaduthala. To reach Vallarpadam, the rail line travels through the Vembanad Bridge and three tiny islands in Vembanad Lake, including the Idyakkara and Mulavukad islands.
