The Ancient Vishnugudi Digambar Jain Temple Basadi, located on the route from Panamaram to Nadavayal, is a significant archaeological site in Wayanad. This temple, protected by the Archaeological Department of India, showcases intricate stone carvings featuring flowers, animals, and mythological figures, making it a captivating destination for history enthusiasts.
Exploring the Panamaram Jain Temple
Accessible from both directions, the temple is about 500 meters from the main road, but visitors should note that there is no dedicated parking space available. Despite being a protected site, there are ongoing concerns about its maintenance and preservation. Interestingly, historical debates surround its identity, with some claims suggesting origins beyond Jainism, possibly linked to Hinduism.
Nestled amidst coffee plantations, the temple offers a serene and secluded atmosphere. Photography is allowed, and there is no entry fee, making it an appealing stop for those exploring the area. However, visitors have noted challenges in locating the temple and recommending improved signage or guidance.
Currently under renovation by the Archaeological Survey of India, efforts are underway to restore and conserve this historical site. Despite the difficulties in finding and accessing the temple, it remains a must-visit for anyone interested in history and archaeology.
