Vizhinjam Lighthouse

Vizhinjam Lighthouse is located near the Kovalam beach in the Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala. Vizhinjam was a very busy port in the 18th and 19th centuries and the need for a lighthouse was very much, the Vizhinjam Lighthouse was built and started functioning in 1972. The tower is 36 meters tall and cylindrical. Red and white bands make up the paint markings. Metal halide lights and a direct drive mechanism are installed in the lighthouse.

The Vizhinjam Lighthouse is open for visitors from 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM & 2:00 PM – 6:00 PM all days except Mondays. The entry fee for Vizhinjam Lighthouse is INR 20 for adults, INR 10 for children and senior citizens, INR 50 for foreigners, and INR 10 for Photography. Children below 3 years are exempted from entry fees. Visitors are not allowed to enter the engine room, staff quarters, and other restricted areas. Umbrellas, Walking sticks, bags, eatable items, etc are not allowed inside the Lighthouse tower.

The best time to visit Vizhinjam Lighthouse is from October to March and reaching Vizhinjam Lighthouse is easy by road. The nearest railway station is Thiruvananthapuram Central which is located 15 kilometers away and the closest airport is Thiruvananthapuram International Airport which is also located at a distance of 15 kilometers from Vizhinjam Lighthouse.
