Tucked away in the Palakkad district of Kerala, the Chulanur Peafowl Sanctuary—also known as Mayiladumpara, meaning “the rock where peacocks dance”—offers a unique retreat into nature’s splendor. Declared a sanctuary on March 14, 1996, this is Kerala’s only sanctuary dedicated exclusively to the Indian Peafowl, India’s national bird. Spanning over 500 acres (3.42 sq. km) in the dry deciduous forests of the Alathur Forest Range, the sanctuary is a haven for birdwatchers, photographers, and wildlife lovers alike. Named in honor of noted ornithologist K.K. Neelakantan, it is one of the few places in India where peafowls roam freely in the wild, their iridescent feathers dancing against the backdrop of scrubland, medicinal herbs, and tropical flora.

Chulanur Peafowl Sanctuary: A Natural Theatre of Colors and Calls

Home to over 200 free-roaming peafowls, the sanctuary is also rich in biodiversity, supporting over 100 bird species, small mammals, reptiles, and indigenous medicinal plants. Visitors can explore the forest on guided nature walks, where early mornings and late afternoons provide the best chances to witness the dazzling courtship displays of the peacocks. The forest’s dry terrain is shaped by the Palakkad Gap’s hot winds, receiving both southwest and northeast monsoons, with an annual rainfall of around 2200 mm, creating an environment both harsh and hospitable.

The area offers more than just sightings; it’s a chance to connect with the rhythm of nature. Photography, silent observation, and birdwatching are especially rewarding here, and the sanctuary’s undisturbed ambiance makes it ideal for solo nature walks or small-group eco-tours. Managed by the Kerala Forest and Wildlife Department, the sanctuary continues its focused efforts on peafowl conservation, making it not just a scenic destination but a cornerstone of wildlife preservation in the region.

Visitor Information

Located about 30 kilometers from Palakkad, 20 kilometers from Thrissur, and just 8 kilometers from Thiruvilwamala (its administrative headquarters), Chulanur Peafowl Sanctuary is easily accessible by road. Entry is free, but visitors must check in at the forest office. The sanctuary welcomes visitors every day between 9 AM and 5 PM. The best time to visit Chulanur Peafowl Sanctuary is between October and March, when the weather is pleasant and wildlife sightings, particularly of peacocks, are more likely.

To enhance your experience, it’s recommended to visit in small, quiet groups to avoid disturbing the birds. Be sure to carry water, wear comfortable walking shoes, and bring sun protection, while also avoiding plastic to help preserve the sanctuary’s fragile ecosystem. This destination is ideal for nature lovers, photographers, and anyone seeking a tranquil wildlife encounter. For the most vivid displays of peafowl, plan your visit during the early morning or at dusk.
