Agasthyakoodam Peak, also known as Agastya Mala Peak, is the second-highest peak in Kerala with an elevation of 1868 meters. It is located within the Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary and is part of the Agasthyamala Biosphere Reserve. The peak is named after the sage Agasthya, who is believed to have meditated here. A shrine dedicated to him is situated at the top of the peak.

Agasthyakoodam Peak is a popular destination for nature lovers, especially bird watchers. The peak and its surroundings are home to over 2000 species of plants and animals, including rare medicinal herbs, orchids, lichens, mosses, and ferns. Some of the birds that can be spotted here are the Nilgiri flycatcher, Malabar grey hornbill, broad-tailed grassbird, and crimson-backed sunbird.

The peak can be reached by a three-day trek that starts from Bonacaud. The trek is open from January to April every year and requires prior permission from the Forest Department. Food and accommodation are provided by the Forest Department at the base camp. Keep in mind that only 100 passes are issued per day, so be sure to have all necessary documents ready when booking opens to secure your spot. The trekking fee as of 2023 is INR 1800 and it may vary in the coming years.

– Day 1: Bonacaud Picket Station to Athirumala Base Camp (22 km)
– Day 2: Athirumala Base Camp to Agasthyakoodam Peak and back (10 km)
– Day 3: Athirumala Base Camp to Bonacaud Picket Station (22 km)
