The Bharathappuzha River, also known as the Nila or Ponnani River, is a river in Kerala, India. It is Kerala’s second-longest river, with a length of 209 kilometers. Nila has shaped the culture and way of life in Kerala’s South Malabar region. In ancient scripts and records, it is also known as “Peraar.” The Bharathapuzha River is an interstate river and a lifeline water supply for a population that lives in four administrative districts: Kerala’s Malappuram, Thrissur, and Palakkad districts, and Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore and Tiruppur.
The Tirur River joins the major tributary of the Bharathapuzha, which originates as small rivulets in various parts of the Western Ghats and flows westward across Palakkad Gap (also known as Palghat gap) through Palakkad, Thrissur, and Malappuram districts of Kerala, with several tributaries. The Bharathappuzha takes an almost northerly direction for the first 40 kilometers or so, before Pollachi, near Coimbatore.
