The Chaliyar River is a river that flows through Kerala state of India. It is the fourth-longest river in Kerala, flowing through the districts of Malappuram and Kozhikode with a length of 169 km, and empties into the Arabian Sea from Beypore. The river is also known as the Beypore River.

The Chaliyar River runs through several towns and villages including Nilambur, Edavanna, Areekode, Kizhuparamba, Cheruvadi, Mavoor, Peruvayal, Feroke, and Beypore. Historically, the river was heavily utilized for commercial activities during the 19th-20th century. The river originates from the Elambalari hills in Tamil Nadu on the Western Ghats. The river does not dry up even in the drought season. The oldest teak plantation in the world at Nilambur, Conolly’s Plot, is situated on the bank of Chaliyar.

Chaliyar River: Kayaking and Conservation

If you are looking for an adventurous and eco-friendly way to explore the beauty of Kerala, kayaking on the Chaliyar River is a great option. It offers a scenic and serene backdrop for kayaking, with lush green forests, coconut groves, sandbanks, and islands along its course.

People of all ages and abilities can participate in kayaking at Chaliyar River as long as they fall within the age range of 10 to 70 years old. Non-swimmers are also welcome to join the expedition as they are provided with life jackets and safety instructions. The kayaks come in various types, including single-seater, double-seater, inflatable, and sit-on-top. For those seeking a different experience, stand-up paddleboards and sailboats are also available. Trained lifeguards and motorized rescue boats are present to assist in case of any emergency.

Kayaking in the Chaliyar River not only provides a thrilling experience but also serves as a means of promoting awareness for the preservation of the river and its ecosystem. Each year, adventurers from around the globe participate in the Chaliyar River Paddle, a three-day kayaking journey organized by Kozhikode-based water sports and outdoor adventure company, Jellyfish Watersports. The trip, which involves camping overnight in Mampad and Areekode, covers a distance of 68 km, starting from Nilambur and concluding in Beypore.

In addition to their environmental initiative, which involves collecting and recycling river waste, participants can enjoy a one-of-a-kind opportunity to appreciate nature, test their limits, make new acquaintances, and contribute to a worthy cause. Those who are interested in joining the Chaliyar River Paddle can refer to Jellyfish Watersports’ website or social media for additional information, book their kayak online, or make inquiries. This is an adventure in Kerala that should not be missed!
