Chapel of Our Lady of the Mount

Built between 1510 and 1519 by Afonso de Albuquerque after the Portuguese conquest of Goa, this historic chapel stands as a testament to the region’s colonial past.

Chapel of Our Lady of the Mount – A Timeless Retreat

Constructed using laterite stone, it features a blend of Baroque and Mannerist architectural styles, with its whitewashed façade standing in stark contrast to the lush greenery and azure skies surrounding it. Overlooking the Mandovi River and its scenic islands, the chapel provides one of the most stunning panoramic viewpoints in Goa, especially at sunset. 

Inside, the chapel exudes a serene ambiance, with soft lighting, a delicate altar, and religious artwork that invites reflection. The main altar is dedicated to Our Lady of the Mount, flanked by busts of St. Vincent and St. Lawrence, adding to its historical and spiritual charm. Although the chapel had fallen into ruin over the centuries, a restoration project in 2001, funded by Fundação Oriente and the Goan state government, helped revive its grandeur.

A Cultural Gem and Serene Escape

The chapel is not just a religious site but also a cultural landmark, hosting the annual Monte Music Festival every February. This event seamlessly blends Indian and Western classical music, filling the chapel with mesmerizing melodies and drawing music lovers from around the world. Its tranquil setting and rich history have also made it a popular filming location for Bollywood movies. 

Easily accessible by road with ample parking nearby, the Chapel of Our Lady of the Mount is a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts, photographers, and those seeking a peaceful retreat. Open to visitors from Monday to Saturday from 9 AM to 7 PM, and on Sundays from 9 AM to 12 PM, it offers an enriching experience where spirituality, history, and natural beauty come together in perfect harmony.
