The Chinnar River originates in the Anamalai Hills, flowing 18 kilometers through the picturesque landscapes of Idukki District, Kerala, India. It serves as a vital boundary between Tamil Nadu and Kerala, defining the edges of the Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary and Aanamalai Tiger Reserve.
Along its route, the river passes through dense shola forests, the Muthuvar settlement of Olikkudi, and several small villages. One of its notable crossings is the SH 17 road bridge, equipped with border checkpoints for both states. Wildlife enthusiasts may spot adult crocodiles in its waters, first reported in 1992.
At Koottar, the Chinnar River meets the Pamba River, where visitors can stay in a treehouse amidst tranquil surroundings. The river’s catchment area includes the western part of the Manjampatti Valley basin, fed by the Pambar River and various smaller streams, enriching its biodiversity and ecological significance.
