The Church of St. Francis of Assisi, one of Old Goa’s most significant landmarks, reflects the region’s deep-rooted colonial history and religious heritage. Originally founded as a small chapel in 1521 by Portuguese Franciscan friars, it was later rebuilt into the grand structure seen today. Completed in 1661, the church stands as an architectural masterpiece, combining European design elements with local influences.

Architectural Grandeur and Interior Beauty

The church’s striking facade features a three-tiered structure flanked by octagonal towers, characteristic of Tuscan and Baroque architectural styles. A statue of St. Michael stands in a central niche, adding to its grandeur. Inside, the church captivates visitors with its beautifully decorated barrel-vaulted nave, adorned with intricate floral frescoes. Painted panels on the walls illustrate the life of St. Francis of Assisi, providing insight into his spiritual journey. The high altar, a focal point of the interior, houses a large statue of St. Francis alongside Jesus on the cross, with figures of St. Peter and St. Paul positioned below.

A UNESCO Heritage Site and Historical Landmark

The Church of St. Francis of Assisi is part of the UNESCO-listed Churches and Convents of Goa, highlighting its historical and cultural importance. Adjacent to the church is a convent, originally established in 1517, which has since been repurposed into an archaeological museum. This museum showcases artifacts that offer a glimpse into Goa’s colonial past, making it an essential stop for history enthusiasts.
