Gavi Dam, also known as Gaviar Dam, stands as a small yet significant gravity dam nestled in the scenic Pathanamthitta district of Kerala. Its purpose lies in power generation, forming an integral part of the esteemed Sabarigiri hydroelectric project. Ownership of this remarkable structure rests with the Kerala State Electricity Board, a testament to its importance in the region.
Impressive Features of Gavi Dam
Situated on the Gaviyar River, a tributary of the Pamba River, Gavi Dam graces the landscape of Seethathode village. As a crucial component of the Sabarigiri Hydro Electric Project, which holds the distinction of being the second largest hydroelectric project in Kerala, this dam plays a pivotal role in harnessing the power of flowing waters.
The reservoir formed by Gavi Dam is shared with Kullar Dam, collectively contributing to the conservation and utilization of water resources. Through a well-constructed tunnel, the water from this reservoir is effectively directed to the Meenar-I reservoir.
The dam itself stands as an impressive masonry-gravity dam, with a height measuring 17.07 meters and a length extending to 113 meters. Categorized as a medium-height dam, it showcases the engineering prowess and expertise required for its construction.
Gavi Eco-Tourism and Its Delights
Adding to the allure of the dam, the surrounding area is home to Gavi Eco-Tourism, a noteworthy initiative by the Kerala Forest Development Corporation. Visitors can immerse themselves in a range of eco-tourism activities, such as thrilling jeep safaris, serene boat rides, and the opportunity to enjoy a panoramic view of Sabarimala.
The completion of the Gavi Dam dates back to the year 1990, marking a significant milestone in the region’s pursuit of hydroelectric power generation. Today, it continues to serve as a testament to Kerala’s dedication to sustainable energy sources and the harnessing of natural resources for the benefit of its people.
