A Journey through History, Culture, and Nature
The museum is housed in a two-story building that was once a government guest house. It’s divided into four sections, each offering a unique perspective on the history, culture, nature, and pre-history of Idukki.
The pre-history section showcases ancient relics like stone tools, pottery shards, fossils, and rock paintings from the Paleolithic, Neolithic, and Megalithic periods. It offers insights into the early human settlements and activities in the region.
The history section takes visitors on a journey through the various dynasties and kingdoms that have ruled over Idukki. It also features exhibits about important historical events and personalities that have shaped the region’s history. These include the Mysore invasion, the Pazhassi rebellion, the Malabar migration, the formation of Kerala state, and the construction of the Idukki dam.
The culture section is a vibrant display of the art forms, festivals, rituals, costumes, jewelry, cuisine, and literature of Idukki. It also exhibits rare and unique musical instruments, folk paintings, manuscripts, and handicrafts of the region.
The nature section showcases the diverse and stunning natural beauty of Idukki, such as its flora, fauna, landscapes, waterfalls, and forests. It also raises awareness about the environmental issues and challenges faced by the region and its people.
