Situated atop the Illikkal Malaa at an altitude of around 4000 feet above sea level, Illikkal Kallu in Thalanadu, Kottayam district of Kerala, is a well-known tourist attraction. It boasts breathtaking views and is one of the tallest peaks in the Western Ghats. Exploring the Picturesque Illikkal Kallu
One of the most notable features of Illikkal Kallu is the unique shape of its three hills, creating a distinct landscape. The surrounding mountain streams converge, creating the tranquil Meenachil River. Located just 56 kilometers from Kottayam railway station and 30 kilometers from Vagamon hill station, Illikkal Kallu is an ideal destination for a day trip with loved ones. However, the road leading to the hilltop is in poor condition, so visitors must exercise caution while driving. Alternatively, visitors can rent a jeep from Teekoy town, located six kilometers from Illikkal Kallu. For those in need of refreshments, small shops are available nearby to purchase snacks and drinks.
Best Time to Visit Illikkal Kallu
The best time to visit Illikkal Kallu is the post-monsoon season (September to January). During this time, visitors can enjoy the lush greenery and clear views of the surroundings. However, it is risky to go during the monsoon as the hilly paths are slippery and misty. One can observe the Arabian Sea from the hilltops as a slender blue line on the distant horizon. The sight of the sunset during a full moon evening from the peak can be truly breathtaking, with the moon ascending like a second sun while the orange sun descends.
How to Reach
Illikal Kallu is conveniently reachable by road, with bus services available from nearby towns to Thalanad. Visitors traveling from the Pala area should take the Barananganam-Kalathukadavu-Nellapara route, while those coming from Kochi can opt for the Muvattupuzha-Thodupuzha-Muttom route. The closest railway stations are Pala Railway Station, situated around 30 kilometers away, and Kottayam Railway Station, located about 56 kilometers away. For air travelers, the nearest airport is Cochin International Airport, situated approximately 85 kilometers away.
Entry Fee and Charges
To access Illikkal Kallu, visitors are required to pay an entrance fee of INR 20 for adults and INR 10 for senior citizens. Additionally, there is a fee of INR 59 for cameras and INR 1180 for video or photo shoots. Parking fees are also applicable, with two and three-wheeler vehicles costing INR 13, cars and jeeps costing INR 26, and mini-buses costing INR 65.
Visitors must park their vehicles downhill in the Pay & Park area before either trekking up to the viewpoint or opting for a shared Jeep ride. The Jeep ride costs INR 39 per person and includes both the uphill and downhill rides.
