The International Coir Museum is located in Kalavoor in the Alappuzha district of Kerala. The Museum was established by the Coir Board in its Diamond Jubilee year to showcase the history and evolution of technological advancements in the coir sector. The museum was inaugurated by the Chief Minister of Kerala in May 2014. It is the first of its kind in the world and is open to the public.
The museum displays various aspects of the traditional methods and evolution of the coir industry, such as retting, fiber extraction, and the introduction of mechanization. A brief video presentation provides visitors with a glimpse into the history and growth of the industry, as well as the latest advancements achieved through research and development, leaving them with fond recollections of the coir industry. Additionally, a souvenir shop located within the museum offers visitors the opportunity to peruse and purchase a diverse selection of coir handicrafts, doormats, ornaments, and other items.
There is a guide who will walk with you and explain everything in detail. In addition, there are a variety of art pieces made using coir that makes it an excellent opportunity for amazing photos. There are sculptures, portraits, and various other creations crafted out of coir and they are quite glorious. The Coir museum also offers courses if you are interested to build a business in the jute industry. Indeed, it’s great for kids to learn about this fascinating fiber that originates from the coconut tree.
