Kadalur Point Lighthouse, also known as Thikkodi Lighthouse, is a charming coastal beacon located in Kadalur near Koyilandy in Kozhikode district, Kerala. Standing tall on the shores of the Arabian Sea, this 34-meter-high lighthouse has been guiding mariners since it was first lit in 1907. Situated about 35 kilometers from Calicut city, the lighthouse not only serves a vital role in maritime safety but also draws travelers with its historic aura and breathtaking sea views.
A Hidden Coastal Gem of Kozhikode
Originally built over the site of a shipwreck at what was once known as Cotta Point, the lighthouse is a prominent feature along the Malabar Coast. It was commissioned on October 20, 1909, and constructed using stone masonry with distinct black and white bands. Originally fitted with a PV burner, the lighting system was replaced with a modern metal halide lamp in 1996. The structure is managed by the central government and holds historic and navigational significance.
The lighthouse is located near NH66 and is easily accessible through rural roads. Visitors can approach the lighthouse via two entrances, with the second entrance requiring just a short 200-meter walk to the tower. Though entry to the lighthouse is allowed only at your own risk, the panoramic views of the coastline and nearby Thikkodi Beach from the top make it a worthwhile climb.
Surrounded by coconut groves and not far from Velliyamkallu Island, the area is also home to migratory birds during the winter months. Ongoing beautification projects, including park developments and landscape enhancements, are adding to the visitor experience. The location offers an ideal setting for quiet evenings and sunset photography, making it a peaceful escape from the city.
