The Kakkulangara Masjid or Kakkulangara Mosque is located 7 kilometers north of Kannur in Valapattanam. It was constructed in the traditional Kerala architectural style, but with some Arabic influences. Its roots can be traced back to two separate tales. Some people associate the mosque with Malik Ibn Dinar, one of the first Persian scholars to visit India.
The travelogue of Ibn Battuta mentions this Mosque. The Chirakkal Raja donated the land for the mosque, with his chief masons assisting in the building of the mosque, which is a fusion of Kerala temple architecture and Arabian design. The building was attributed to the Arakkal kingdom. Visit this mosque to marvel at its picturesque setting, lovely pond, ancient minaret, Muslim saint’s dargah, and impressive traditional architecture. One of the oldest minarets in the state can be found at the mosque.
