Kallayi River

The Kallayi River or Kallayi Puzha is a river located in the Kozhikode district of the Indian state of Kerala. It originates in the Western Ghats at an altitude of 45 meters and flows for a distance of 22 to 40 kilometers, depending on the source. It is linked to the Chaliyar River by a man-made canal on the south side of the small timber village of Kallayi, lying on its banks.

History and Cultural Significance

Kallayi was once known for its timber businesses, and many of these have now been closed down. The river was used for transporting timber from the nearby Nilambur forest region. The river is connected by two canals, namely the Elathur Kallayi canal and the Beypore Kallayi Canal. Kallayi is a shadow of its former glory, but still retains some of its charm and heritage. The river is now primarily used for recreational purposes.

The village of Kallayi is situated on the banks of the river and was a busy timber trade center during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Kallayi River is also a source of livelihood for many fishermen and boatmen who live along its banks. The river is home to many species of fish and birds. The river also hosts many festivals and events throughout the year, such as boat races, cultural programs, and religious ceremonies.

The best time to visit the Kallayi River is from October to February, when the weather is pleasant and the river is calm. One can reach Kallayi easily by road. The nearest airport to Kallayi is Calicut International Airport, which is about 25 kilometers away, and the nearest railway station is Kozhikode Railway Station, which is 3 kilometers away.
