The Kaviyoor Rock Cut Temple is a fascinating historical site. It is believed to date back to the latter half of the 8th century and is located half a kilometer north of Kammalathakidi Junction along the Thiruvalla-Kozancheri route.
The temple comprises a central shrine housing a Sivalinga, an Ardhamandapa, and a pillared facade. The cave itself measures 19 feet 8 inches wide and 8 feet 6 inches high, with two pillars of 8 feet 8 inches creating three cave openings. The central shrine houses a cylindrical rock-cut Siva linga, and in front of the sanctum lies a rectangular hall measuring 19 feet 8 inches by 5 feet.
The Ardhamandapa features engraved figures of Chathurbhuja Ganapathy and a born sage on its north and south walls, while the entrance is guarded by two Dwarapalaka figures – one resembling a local chieftain and the other carrying a ‘gada.’ This historical gem was declared a protected monument in 1965, preserving its architectural and cultural significance for generations to come.
