Steeped in centuries of maritime history, Kollam Port—once known as Quilon Port—is a prominent harbor located about 4 km north of downtown Kollam in Kerala. Strategically placed on the Arabian Sea coast, this historic port was once a thriving trade center that attracted merchants from as far as China, Egypt, and the Mediterranean world. Dating back to at least AD 825, Kollam’s seafaring heritage made it one of the major global trading hubs of the medieval world, standing shoulder to shoulder with ancient ports like Alexandria, Cairo, Quanzhou, and Malacca.

A Historic Port with Modern Aspirations

Before becoming the capital of the independent Venad kingdom, Kollam played a crucial role as a prominent port city under the Chera Dynasty. Its favorable location and navigable waterways positioned it at the heart of Kerala’s coastal trade network. Between the 9th and 17th centuries, the port played a key role in the exchange of spices, cashews, tiles, and minerals, marking its place on ancient maritime maps.

Today, Kollam Port stands as Kerala’s third-largest port in terms of cargo volume and infrastructure, following Cochin and Vizhinjam. While deeply rooted in history, the port also embraces a progressive outlook.. It underwent significant modernization in 2007, equipping it to handle a variety of cargo, including marine products, sand, minerals, and cashews.

Key infrastructure includes:

  • Two wharves (totaling 278 meters, with plans to expand to 175 meters each)
  • Extensive stacking yards and transit sheds
  • A navigable channel with a depth of 7.2 meters and an average tidal range of 2.5 feet.
  • Cargo handling tools such as Liebherr cranes, Hydra cranes, forklifts, and Reach Stackers

The port is also an immigration checkpoint and an EDI-enabled customs facility, ensuring smooth operations for both domestic and international vessels. Positioned just 85 kilometers from Vizhinjam International Seaport and 67 kilometers from Trivandrum International Airport, it offers excellent sea and air connectivity.

Visitor Information

Kollam Port is situated around 4 kilometers north of central Kollam city, 14 kilometers from Paravur, and approximately 24 kilometers from Varkala Town. It enjoys excellent road connectivity, lying close to National Highway 66 and offering convenient access from nearby hubs like Kochi and Vizhinjam ports. The nearest airport is Trivandrum International Airport, located 67 kilometers away, ensuring smooth air travel for visitors and business personnel alike.

In addition to its maritime significance, the area surrounding the port offers several attractions, including the scenic Ashtamudi Lake, the historic Thangassery Lighthouse, Kollam Beach, and the city’s renowned cashew processing units. Although primarily a functional seaport, Kollam Port can appeal to those interested in maritime history and Kerala’s trading heritage. For such visitors, guided tours may be available, but it is recommended to check in advance for necessary permissions.
