The historic port of Kollam is located 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) north of downtown Kollam (previously Quilon), 14 kilometers north of Paravur, and 24 kilometers north of Varkala Town. In terms of goods handled and infrastructure, it is Kerala’s second largest port. From the ninth to the seventeenth centuries, Quilon Port, located on India’s south-west coast, became one of the country’s most important commerce hubs.
Kollam was a Chera Dynasty port city until the independent Venad kingdom was formed, of which it became the capital. Previously, Kollam, along with Alexandria and Cairo in Egypt, Quanzhou in China, and Malacca in the Malaysian archipelago, was considered one of the four early entrepots in the global sea trade around the 13th century.
