Mooppankunnu is a scenic heritage picnic spot located at Mahe that offers modern amenities without compromising on the natural beauty of the wooded area. The hillock has been aesthetically designed with modern amenities while preserving its natural beauty. It has a rich history and cultural significance, as it was renovated from a bygone French memory.
Historic Features and Scenic Views
The hill is designed with pavements for walking, park benches for resting, and restroom facilities for the public’s benefit. Cast iron railings line the walkways for safety. The Hillock is home to the historic Light House and provides a great view of the Arabian Sea. The area behind Mooppankunnu and the lighthouse was once used by French officials where their major offices were built.
Mooppankunnu was also built by the French as a watch tower to spend time enjoying the mesmerizing vista of the estuary, the Arabian Sea, and Mayyazhipuzha (Mahé River). The Mayyazhipuzha starts in the Wayanad district of the Western Ghats and flows through hilly towns in Kozhikode, then through several towns in the Malabar plains before reaching the northern boundary of Mahé and emptying into the Arabian Sea. Visitors can enjoy a serene sunset over the sea from this wonderful vantage point. To make the most of the place, visitors can also explore the Mahe Boat House and Walkway.
