Mundakkal Beach

Mundakkal Beach is a popular tourist destination located in Kollam, along the Kollam-Paravur Coastal Road, with a distance of 4 km from Chinnakada and 11.2 km from Paravur. It is known for its golden sand, clear blue waters, and scenic views. Visitors can enjoy activities such as swimming, sunbathing, and fishing. The beach is also surrounded by coconut groves and palm trees, making it a picturesque location to relax and enjoy the natural beauty of the region.

Mundakkal Beach holds significance as a site for the yearly “Balitharpanam” ritual. According to Hindu tradition, the ritual performed during the new moon day in the Malayalam month of Karkidakom is believed to bring good luck and appease ancestors’ spirits. Thousands of devotees, including women and children, offer “Bali” at Mundakkal and Thirumullavaram beaches, as well as other renowned beaches and river banks in Kerala. Mundakkal is also referred to as the “Mundakkal Papanasham Beach.” Devotees believe that taking a dip in its waters will purify one’s soul and wash away all sins.

Mundakkal Beach has no entry fee and is open year-round, but the best time to visit is from November to March in the evenings. It is 6 km from Kollam city and easily reachable by road. The closest railway station is Kollam Junction (3.5 km) and the nearest airport is Thiruvananthapuram International Airport (61 km).
