Neyyar River

Neyyar River is an important river that flows through the Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala in India. It originates from the Agastya Mala in the Western Ghats and flows through the Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary and into the Neyyar Reservoir. Neyyar River is an excellent destination to experience Kerala’s diverse nature and culture, making it a perfect spot for adventure seekers, nature lovers, and spiritual seekers.

Attractions and Activities Along the Neyyar River

The town of Neyyattinkara, which is situated on the banks of the river, is named after this river. The town has a rich history and culture and is famous for its temples and festivals. You can also visit the nearby Poovar beach, where the river meets the Arabian Sea. Neyyar Dam is also a popular picnic spot located at the foot of the Western Ghats, about 30 km from Thiruvananthapuram. The dam forms a lake that has clear blue waters and offers boating facilities.

The Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary is spread over the southeast corner of the Western Ghats and is the drainage basin for the Neyyar River and its tributaries – Mullayar and Kallar. The river finally empties into the Arabian Sea. The towering peak of Agasthyamalai is a very prominent landmark in the sanctuary.

While the river is accessible throughout the year, the best time to visit is from October to March when the weather is pleasant. Neyyar River can be reached by road from Thiruvananthapuram, which is about 30 kilometers away. The nearest major railway station is Thiruvananthapuram Central, and the closest airport is Thiruvananthapuram International Airport.
