Pakshipathalam Bird Sanctuary, located in Wayanad district, is renowned for its rich birdlife and features a historic cave believed to have been used by ancient saints. The sanctuary is a popular trekking destination, with undulating hills attracting adventurers seeking challenging trails. Located 7 km northeast of Thirunelli town, Pakshipathalam lies amidst lush greens and diverse bird species, making it ideal for bird watchers.
Activities at Pakshipathalam include trekking through forests and waterfalls, bird-watching with tribal guides, wildlife spotting (including elephants, leopards, and tigers), exploring caves and rock formations, and camping outside the peak area. Wildlife enthusiasts will appreciate Pakshipathalam’s biodiversity, with a diverse range of bird species and occasional sightings of gaurs and Giant Malabar Squirrels.
The trek starts near Thirunelli Temple, covering a 16 km round trip with moderate difficulty, featuring a watchtower, Garudapara rock, and the Papanasini stream. For transportation, buses are available from Wayanad to Thirunelli Temple, or visitors can opt for a taxi or cab for a comfortable journey.
Pakshipathalam is not only a sanctuary of birds but also a historical and natural treasure nestled in the Brahmagiri Hills, awaiting exploration by those seeking an immersive adventure in Kerala’s wilderness. The best time to visit is during the winter months from November to January. The Pakshipathalam Bird Sanctuary is open from 6 AM to 6 PM. The entry fee is INR 50 per person for Indian nationals and INR 200 per person for foreign nationals. Additional fees apply for a forest guide.
