The Pallipurathukavu Devi Temple, situated at Kodimatha in the Kottayam district of Kerala, is a prominent Hindu temple revered by devotees of the goddess Bhagavathy or Durga. The temple is also called Pallipurathu Kavu, Pallippuram Devi Temple, or Pallippurathamma Temple and is recognized for its exceptional architecture, captivating carvings, and intricate designs.

Pallipurathukavu Devi Temple: An Old Hindu Pilgrimage Site

The Pallipurathukavu Devi Temple is one of the 108 Durga temples in Kerala and the temple’s main shrine is built in the shape of a chariot with four wheels, surrounded by a circular wall. The goddess’s idol is made of panchaloha, an alloy of five metals, and is adorned with gold ornaments and flowers. Situated south of Kottayam town, the temple is a renowned pilgrimage site in Kerala, attracting a significant number of devotees annually.

Festivals, Offerings, and Rituals at Pallipurathu Kavu

The Pallipurathukavu Devi Temple celebrates various festivals and rituals throughout the year, with the Patham Udaya Mahotsavam being the most famous. This festival is held on the 10th day of the Malayalam month Medam and features cultural and religious programs. The annual festival is held in the Malayalam month of Meenam, attracting thousands of devotees who participate in the ten-day celebration that includes the hoisting of the temple flag and ends with the Arattu of the idol.

The Pallipurathukavu Devi Temple is also known for its unique offerings and rituals such as Thulabharam, Udayasthamana Pooja, Chuttuvilakku, Karthika Vilakku, Navaratri Pooja, and Nadel Thiyattu. Thulabharam is an offering where a devotee weighs himself or herself against any item of his or her choice, such as rice, sugar, coconut, banana, etc., and donates the equivalent amount to the temple.

Udayasthamana Pooja is a continuous worship of the goddess from sunrise to sunset. Chuttuvilakku is an offering where a devotee lights lamps around the temple wall. Karthika Vilakku is an offering where a devotee lights lamps on the Karthika star day in the Malayalam month of Vrischikam (November-December). Navaratri Pooja is a nine-day worship of the goddess during the Navaratri festival in September-October.

Location and Timings of Pallipurathukavu Temple

The temple is also situated nearby to the District Tourism Promotion Council office and is about 2.5 kilometers away from Kottayam Railway station. The nearest airport is Cochin International Airport located 88 kilometers away. The temple timings for pooja are from 5 am to 12 pm and 5:30 pm to 8 pm on all days of the week.
