Panachikkadu Dakshina Mookambika Temple, situated in Panachikkad, in the Kottayam District of Kerala, is a place of religious significance dedicated to the goddess Saraswati, also known as Dakshina Mookambika. The primary deity is Lord Vishnu, and the temple boasts a history spanning over a thousand years.

The Mythical Tale and Sacred Artistry

The legend of the Panachikkadu temple unfolds as Nambudiri, in pursuit of a son, is guided by a divine dream. In this dream, Goddess Mookambika Devi appears in the form of an umbrella, and Nambudiri establishes the goddess as the main deity of the temple.

The temple’s surroundings are adorned with the goddess seated in a pond, surrounded by creepers and shrubs. Notably, there is a shrine dedicated to Yakshi, along with Brahmarakshas, installed in a natural habitat. Stone carvings within the temple depict Lord Vishnu engaging in a game similar to volleyball.

Panachikkadu Temple: Rituals, Festivals, and Divine Moments

When visiting the Panachikkadu Temple, it’s recommended to arrive before 10 AM to witness important rituals, as the temple closes at 10:30 AM. Devotees also get the opportunity to purchase Trimadhuram and Payasam from the temple.

The temple comes alive during major festivals like Saraswati Pooja, celebrated with enthusiasm during Navaratri in September-October. The Vidyarambham ceremony on Vijayadashami marks the initiation of education. Additionally, an international cultural festival during Navaratri showcases performances by renowned artists.

Panachikkadu Dakshina Mookambika Temple is conveniently located in Panachikkad, well-connected by roads. For those planning a visit, there are multiple routes to the temple from different places. The nearest bus stands and railway stations are in Kottayam (10.5 kilometers) and Changanasserry (13 kilometers), while Kochi Airport is the closest at 95 kilometers.
