Nestled in the Idukki district of Kerala, Panchalimedu is a hill station and viewpoint that exudes natural beauty and historical significance. The name “Panchalimedu” derives from “Panchali” (Draupadi) and “Medu” (hill), translating to the ‘Hill of Panchali.’ At an elevation of 940 meters (3,080 feet) above sea level, this high-altitude region offers visitors a respite from the mundane, with deep valleys, rolling hills, verdant meadows, and a climate that remains inviting year-round.
Panchalimedu: Nature, Spirituality, and Nearby Wonders
Panchalimedu’s topography, characterized by its lush meadows and pristine surroundings, lures trekkers and nature enthusiasts, particularly during the summer season. While the monsoon months envelop the area in mist and fog, it only adds to the allure of the place.
Panchalimedu View Point can be accessed from Murinjapuzha and Amalagiri via the Kottayam – Kumily state highway, making it a convenient destination for travelers. Panchalimedu features two hills, one of which hosts a temple dedicated to Bhuvaneswari Devi, further enriching the spiritual aspect of the place.
For those looking to explore more of the region, nearby attractions like Parunthumpara, Peeru Hills, Valanjanganam Waterfalls, and Valliyamkavu Devi Temple offer diverse experiences, from panoramic views to scenic waterfalls and historical temples.
Myths and Controversy: Panchalimedu’s Rich History
Panchalimedu also boasts a rich mythological heritage, with local legends suggesting that the Pandavas and Panchali, characters from the epic Mahabharata, spent a year in exile here. The place is marked by a small temple dedicated to Goddess Bhuvaneswari and a circular pond known as Panchalikulam, making it a place of cultural and historical significance.
In 2019, Panchalimedu found itself in controversy when crosses were installed on the hill by Church authorities. Hindu groups protested, alleging encroachment of revenue land, and even installed a Trishula near the crosses. The matter was later resolved with the removal of the crosses following a notice from the District Collector, bringing tranquility back to this serene hill station.
