Perched atop a peaceful hill in Sangolda, Bardez taluka of Goa, Shree Shantadurga Sangodkarin Devasthan is a sanctuary of tranquility and devotion. Located just 9 kilometers from Panaji and 6 kilometers from Mapusa, the temple is dedicated to Goddess Shantadurga, a compassionate form of Durga who symbolizes peace and harmony. The quiet surroundings and stunning views from its hilltop location make it a perfect retreat for anyone looking to connect with their spiritual side or simply enjoy a serene escape.
The Revival of Shree Shantadurga Sangodkarin Devasthan
The temple has a fascinating history. During the Portuguese rule, the idol of Shantadurga was moved from Sangolda to Bicholim to protect it from destruction. Centuries later, in the year 2000, a new temple was constructed in Sangolda, and the original idol was reinstated on February 7 of that year. Today, the temple stands as a beautiful blend of traditional and modern architecture, with its clean, well-maintained surroundings creating a welcoming atmosphere for visitors.
Festivals play a significant role in the life of the temple, bringing together devotees from all over Goa and beyond. The annual Jatra, celebrated in November or December, is a highlight of the temple’s calendar and a vibrant display of devotion and tradition. Other important festivals include Navratra, Maha Shivratri, Ganesh Jayanti, and the monthly Palakhi processions, all observed with a deep sense of faith and joy.
Experiencing Spiritual Solace
Visitors to the temple will find not only a spiritual haven but also practical amenities like ample parking and comfortable accommodations within the complex. Whether you’re seeking a quiet place for meditation, participating in a religious celebration, or simply exploring Goa’s cultural heritage, Shree Shantadurga Sangodkarin Devasthan offers a deeply fulfilling experience in an environment of peace and positivity.
