Siruvani Dam, nestled in the picturesque Kalladikodan hill ranges of Palakkad district, Kerala, is a captivating destination blending natural beauty with historical and functional significance. Located about 46 km from Palakkad town, this masonry gravity dam was constructed across the Siruvani River to meet the increasing demand for drinking water in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu.

Siruvani Dam: A Scenic Reservoir in the Hills of Palakkad

Its construction began in 1973 following an agreement between the Kerala and Tamil Nadu governments and was completed in 1984, funded by Tamil Nadu and executed by the Kerala Public Works Department. Today, the dam supplies high-quality, mineral-rich water to Coimbatore and continues to support its agricultural lands as well.

The reservoir formed by the dam is surrounded by dense forests shared by both Kerala and Tamil Nadu, making the area not only ecologically significant but also incredibly scenic. The eastern side of the dam is flanked by Muthikulam hill, which features a natural waterfall that feeds the reservoir and adds to the charm of the location. Two gateways, built in traditional Kerala and Tamil Nadu architectural styles, welcome visitors to the site and symbolize the collaboration between the two states.

Siruvani is a popular getaway for nature lovers, trekkers, and those looking to unwind amidst serene surroundings. The area offers trekking trails through lush forested terrain, often guided by local tribal experts, providing a unique insight into the biodiversity of the region. Wildlife sightings are common along the trails, and visitors can also enjoy a safari experience at Keralamedu, organized by Mannarkkad Ecotourism, which concludes in the grasslands near the Kerala–Tamil Nadu border.

An additional highlight is the 150-year-old Pattiyar Bungalow situated on the banks of the Siruvani Reservoir. Once built by the British, this bungalow offers sweeping views of the reservoir and the surrounding forest and serves as a peaceful resting spot after a hike. The area’s rich biodiversity, cultural architecture, and the calmness of the waters make Siruvani Dam a compelling destination for both adventure and relaxation.
