SM Street, affectionately known as Mittai Theruvu or Sweet Meat Street, is the bustling soul of Kozhikode’s commercial scene. This iconic lane has been an integral part of the city for centuries and remains a favorite destination for both locals and travelers. Located in the heart of the city, this historic street effortlessly weaves together vibrant marketplaces, local flavors, and cultural narratives.
SM Street (Mittai Theruvu) – A Blend of Sweets, Shopping, and Stories
The street’s origins trace back to the Zamorin era when sweetmeat vendors from Gujarat were invited to set up shops near the royal palace. Over the years, SM Street transformed into a vibrant commercial lane, famous for its irresistible sweets and dynamic shopping options. Its local name, “Mittai Theruvu,” refers to its legacy of sweet shops, a tradition that lives on with stalls offering iconic treats like the famed Kozhikodan Halwa and crispy banana chips.
Beyond its culinary delights, SM Street stretches across 2.1 kilometers, packed with shops selling textiles, readymade garments, jewelry, spices, electronics, and handcrafted items. Whether you’re on the hunt for traditional Kerala sarees or indulging in a shopping spree, the street caters to every taste and budget.
Recent renovations have modernized the street while retaining its nostalgic charm. The 2017 facelift removed unsightly electric cables, introduced antique-style lamp posts, and improved pedestrian pathways. Despite its upgrades, SM Street still retains the warmth and authenticity of its past.
Adding to its literary significance, the street served as inspiration for the award-winning book “Oru Theruvinte Katha” by S.K. Pottekkatt. A statue of the author now stands overlooking the street, a tribute to its influence on Kerala’s cultural and literary heritage.
