Tucked away in the serene surroundings of Chorao Island, St Bartholomew’s Church is a historical gem that transports visitors to a bygone era. Constructed in 1569 by the Society of Jesus, the church is one of the oldest in Goa and stands as a testament to the region’s colonial past. It is dedicated to St. Bartholomew and exhibits a beautiful example of Neo-Roman architectural style, with its pristine whitewashed façade making it a prominent feature of the island’s landscape.

St Bartholomew’s Church: A Peek into History and Architecture

The church’s history dates back to the late 16th century when it was established as a mission center for the Portuguese. Its design features elements typical of Romanesque and Baroque styles, with an elegant simplicity that highlights the religious fervor of its time. Despite being over 400 years old, St. Bartholomew’s Church remains a key place of worship for locals. Visitors are often struck by the church’s peaceful atmosphere and its charming setting amid the village of Chorao, which is known for its quiet, rustic charm.

The church’s tranquil environment offers a welcome contrast to the bustling tourist spots of Goa. Travelers appreciate the church’s serene setting and the opportunity to explore an authentic part of Goa’s heritage. While it’s not a typical high-traffic tourist destination, those who make the effort to visit are rewarded with a peaceful atmosphere, beautiful views of the surrounding village, and a sense of connection to Goa’s colonial history. The surrounding area also features other attractions like Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, making it a perfect stop for those interested in both history and nature.

How to Get There

Reaching St. Bartholomew’s Church is a bit of an adventure, but it’s well worth the effort. To get to Chorao Island, you’ll need to take a public ferry from Ribandar, which is easily accessible from Panaji. Once on the island, the church is a short walk away from the jetty. The best time to visit is during the cooler months (from November to February) when the island is less crowded and the weather is perfect for a quiet stroll.
