Varayadumotta, also known as Varayadumudi and Varayattumutti, is a notable peak within the Ponmudi mountain range. Located in Nedumangad taluk of the Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala, the peak stands approximately 1100 meters high and is named after the Nilgiri tahr due to its preferred habitat for mountain goats.

Conquer Varayadumotta: South India’s Thrilling Trekking Trail

The unique shapes and varying elevations of the hill set it apart from the rest of the range, and it is considered a protected mountain ridge situated between Ponmudi Hills, Palode (Brimore) Hills, and Kallar Valley. Visitors can enjoy the breathtaking views of the surrounding hills, valleys, and forests while trekking through Varayadumotta. Wildlife enthusiasts will find a paradise of wildlife sightings, while adventure seekers who love trekking and exploring nature will find the experience thrilling.

The trek to Varayadumotta is the third adventurous trekking trail in South India after Meesapulimala and Agasthyarkoodam. The trek offers a panoramic view of the hills along with the Nilgiri Tahrs. The trek from the Mankayam check post near Brimore estate is about 11 km long and takes around 10 hours to complete. The trek from the Ponmudi check post near Kallar Valley is also about 11 km long and takes around 10 hours to complete. Both treks offer stunning views of the landscape and glimpses of wildlife such as Nilgiri tahrs, elephants, leopards, deer, monkeys, and birds.

However, the trek is also challenging and risky due to the rough terrain, slippery ground, sharp rocks, unpredictable weather, and lack of water sources. It is only suitable for experienced trekkers who are physically fit and well-equipped. Prior permission is required from the ecotourism units of Mankayam or Ponmudi by paying a fee for the trekking service. The fee varies depending on the number of trekkers, duration of trekking, and route chosen. A forest guide will accompany the trekking team as well. The cost of the trekking package starts from INR 1500 for five persons.

Plan Your Adventure: Varayadumotta and Nearby Treasures

The best time to visit Varayadumotta is between November and May. Avoid a visit to this place during the monsoon season (June and September) as the heavy rains make trekking difficult and dangerous due to landslides, mudslides, and rockfalls. Apart from trekking, visitors can also visit nearby tourist spots such as Kallar River, Ponmudi Hills, Meenmutty waterfalls, Manakayam waterfalls, and Braemore Marigold Estate.

To reach Varayadumotta, one can take the road via Nedumangad or Vithura towns as it is located approximately 40 km away from Thiruvananthapuram city. Buses are available from the Thiruvananthapuram KSRTC bus stand or East Fort bus stand to Nedumangad or Vithura. Upon reaching either town, visitors can hire a taxi or an auto rickshaw to the Mankayam check post or Ponmudi check post, depending on their desired trekking route. Alternatively, visitors can drive their vehicle to the Mankayam check post or Ponmudi check post by following Maps directions. Thiruvananthapuram also houses both the nearest railway station and airport.
