Willingdon Island is the largest man-made island in India, which is a part of Kochi in the state of Kerala. A sizable portion of the current Willingdon Island was filled in by dredging soil surrounding an earlier, but very small, natural island that had been taken from the Lake of Kochi. The Kochi Naval Base, the Southern Naval Command of the Indian Navy, the Plant Quarantine station, the Custom House Cochin, and the Central Institute of Fisheries Technology, a constituent unit of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, all call Willingdon Island home. This island is also significant because it houses the Port of Kochi.
Ferry rides from the mainland are famous on this man-made island of Wellingdon, which is located in the middle of Cochin Port. However busy Kochi Port is with commercial maritime activities, the surrounding environment is calm and lush. A few luxury hotels are located nearby. If you want to escape the bustling metropolis, this is one of the best places to go close to Kochi. Even a backwater boat tour is an option for you and your companion.
