Elephant Conservation and Sustainable Tourism
The Konni Eco-Tourism is a part of the Konni Elephant Reserve, which covers an area of 11.5 square kilometers and is home to about 40 elephants. The center was established in 2004 by the Kerala Forest Department to promote eco-tourism and educate the public about the importance of elephant protection.
One of the primary attractions of the center is the elephant kraal (Aanakkoodu), which is a vast wooden enclosure where elephants are trained and taken care of. Visitors can watch the elephants being fed, bathed, and groomed by their mahouts. The kraal can accommodate up to six elephants at a time, and visitors can learn about the history and culture of elephant management in Kerala and witness the tools and equipment used by the mahouts.
The center offers elephant rides and safaris, taking visitors through the forest trails and providing scenic views of hills, valleys, and streams, along with spotting some wildlife. Bamboo rafting is another activity that visitors can try, accompanied by a guide, while gliding along the Kallar River and admiring the greenery and wildlife.
For visitors looking for an immersive experience, the center offers a nature camp, where they can stay overnight in tents or tree houses. The camp provides basic facilities like toilets, showers, electricity and cultural programs, and campfires in the evening, making it an ideal location for nature lovers.
The Konni Eco-Tourism also serves as a hub for eco-tourism, offering activities like hiking, wildlife watching, boating, and coracle riding. The Adavi Eco-tourism, which is part of the Konni Eco-tourism, is located around 18 kilometers from Pathanamthitta town and is a must-visit destination for tourists.
