Oorakam Mala, also known as Oorakam Hill, is a captivating mountain peak nestled in Oorakam village of Kerala’s Malappuram district. Flanked by Nediyiruppu and Kannamangalam, the hill rises to 2,000 feet and is visible from the Malappuram–Parappanangadi highway between Vengara and Panakkad, approximately 6 km away. Known for its blend of natural beauty and spiritual significance, Oorakam Mala has become a sought-after trekking and pilgrimage destination in North Kerala.
A Journey Through Ancient Trails and Temples
Oorakam Mala is part of the larger Thiruvonamala range, which includes Cheruppadi Mala and Arimbra Hill—popularly known as Mini Ooty. A moderate trek leads you through scenic wilderness to the summit, where you’ll find a 2,000-year-old Jain temple believed to be one of Kerala’s oldest, second only to Sabarimala. Entirely built from granite, this temple comes alive during the annual Thiruvonam festival held under the Thiruvonam star in the Malayalam month of Thulam. During this time, devotees gather in large numbers, earning the hill its alternate name, Thiruvonamala.
A short distance beyond the temple lies an intriguing viewpoint locally known as the “airport signal spot.” From here, on a clear day, one can see planes landing at Calicut International Airport far in the distance. The panoramic views stretch over Malappuram town and its lush surroundings, though the experience can shift dramatically with the sudden arrival of mist.
Visitor Information
The trek to Oorakam Mala typically begins from the Oorakam Poolapees area on the Malappuram–Vengara road. It’s about a 1 km uphill walk—roughly 20 minutes—to reach the temple. Early morning hikes are especially rewarding, offering a cool breeze and the chance to witness a breathtaking sunrise over the hilltops. While there is no formal entrance fee, it’s advisable to carry water, wear sturdy footwear, and check local weather conditions before setting out. Oorakam Mala offers a peaceful escape into nature, combined with a profound connection to Kerala’s spiritual and historical roots.
