The Pookkottur War Memorial Gate, situated at Aravankara in Pookkottur, Malappuram district, Kerala, stands as a tribute to the courageous individuals who died in the Battle of Pookkottur. This battle took place on August 26, 1921, during the wider Malabar Rebellion—a significant anti-colonial uprising led by the Mappilas (Muslims of Malabar) against British rule. The memorial also marks the collective graves of around 460 Mappilas who perished during the confrontation.

Historical Significance of the Battle

Pookkottur, a village in the Eranad taluk, lies strategically along National Highway 213 and is connected to nearby Manjeri by state road, making it a central point for the uprisings of 1921. The region had become a hotbed of resistance during the Khilafat Movement, which energized anti-British sentiments. Under leaders like Variyankunnath Kunjahammad Haji and Vadakkuveettil Mohammed, thousands of Mappila fighters mobilized to challenge British authority and participating landlords.

On the morning of the battle, rebel forces planned an ambush along the road to Pilakkal, aiming to catch the advancing British army by surprise as they moved in via lorries and bicycles. The initial attack, however, was slightly mistimed, giving the British an opportunity to counter with smoke bombs and machine gun fire. Despite facing modern weaponry and overwhelming odds, the rebels fought fiercely for nearly three hours. Official records list 400 rebel casualties and four British deaths, though eyewitness accounts suggest the British suffered heavier losses than reported.

Impact on the Malabar Rebellion

The Battle of Pookkottur was not only pivotal in terms of military combat but also as a catalyst for further uprisings throughout the Malabar region. The aftermath saw rebels temporarily push out British authority, even establishing parallel governance—known as Malayala Rajyam—under Kunjahammad Haji. The British eventually regained control after six months, creating the Malabar Special Police force to suppress continued resistance. The rebellion resulted in thousands of deaths, widespread arrests, and lasting legacies across the district.

The Memorial Today

The Pookkottur War Memorial Gate continues to be a revered landmark in the region, reminding locals and visitors of the sacrifices made for India’s independence. Mass graves from the battle are still preserved, though many remain unprotected. Nevertheless, the memorial serves as a focal point during commemorations, keeping alive the memory of those who gave their lives in the fight against colonial rule and recognizing Pookkottur’s central role in the Malabar Rebellion.
