History of St. Angelo Fort
The fort, also known as Kannur Fort or Kannur Kotta, was built in 1505 by Don Francesco de Almeida, the first Portuguese Viceroy in India. The fort was initially made of wood but was later replaced by stone by Almeida’s successor, Afonso de Albuquerque, and it’s situated in a strategic location near Mapila Bay, a natural harbor, after obtaining permission from the local Kolathiri king.
Over the centuries, the fort witnessed numerous battles and sieges as it was captured by the Portuguese, Dutch, and British. The Dutch seized the fort in 1663, fortified it with three bastions named Hollandia, Zeelandia, and Frieslandia, and built a moat, and a sea wall for protection. They eventually sold the fort to a local Muslim ruler, Ali Raja of Arakkal in 1772, and later it was seized by the British in 1790 and used as their primary military station in Malabar until 1947.
Today, St. Angelo Fort is a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India. The fort houses a museum showcasing different artifacts and weapons from different eras of its history. Additionally, you can explore the ramparts and bastions of the fort and enjoy a panoramic view of the sea and Dharmadam Island, a small island that can be reached on foot during low tide.
