Thevally Palace or Thevally Kottaram in the Kollam District of Kerala is a renowned heritage and a stunning example of architecture located around 6.5 kilometers from Kollam city. This historic structure, which previously served as the residence of the King of Travancore, is accessible to visitors on a houseboat excursion through Ashtamudi Lake.
Considered the Hallmark of Kollam City, the Thevally Palace was built from 1811 to 1819 when Gauri Parvathi Bai ruled this area. The palace was used for administrative purposes when Kollam was the capital of the Travancore kingdom. Thevally Palace is no longer a tourist place as it’s now being used as the NCC Group Headquarters of the Kollam district and the premises are owned by the Public Works Department of Kerala.
The palace’s architecture, a fusion of British, Dutch, and Portuguese elements, bears witness to the former splendor of the princely reign. The entire palace is constructed of lime plaster and laterite, which endlessly enchants onlookers. Due to its setting on the lake’s shores, the palace exudes an allure. A temple with Lord Sastha as its presiding deity is located on the premises. Because of the surrounding lush green coconut plantation and palm trees, this palace’s splendor commands an impressive view. One of Kollam’s most important historical sites is this architectural marvel.
Tourists are not allowed inside the palace as it’s now being used as the NCC Group Headquarters of the Kollam district.
