Vellarada Kurisumala, located at Vellarada village in the Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala, is a popular pilgrimage site for Christian devotees. Aside from being a pilgrimage site, Kurisumala is also a popular spot for adventure seekers. Climbing on rocks to get to the hilltop is one of the best experiences one can have.
Kurisumala is a tall hill that offers a stunning view of the Neyyar reservoir and a part of the Western Ghats to the north. The mountain is surrounded by other mountains such as Kali Mala, Mookunnimala, Agasthyakoodam, Kompa Mala, Puravi Mala, Kunanthumala, Vellarada hills, and Neyyar Dam.
To reach the top, one must climb a steep and narrow path through a rubber plantation. It can be challenging, so it’s important to carry water and take enough rest between hills. Wearing shoes with good grip is also recommended. The journey to the top is worth it, as the beautiful view of the Neyyar reservoir on top of the mountain is indescribable. The best time to visit is early in the morning, just after sunrise, to avoid missing the path and to enjoy the mist, pure oxygen, and breathtaking views.
There are two Kurisumalas in the area, one in Amburi and the other in Vellarada. While the Southern Kurisumala in Vellarada is the most famous, the Amburi Kurisumala is equally charming. Neyyattinkara, the nearest town to Kurisumala, is located 22 kilometers away from Kurisumala. Thiruvananthapuram is 44 kilometers away where the nearest railway station and airport are located.
